So far in A Farewell to Arms, I find the relationship between Catherine Barkley and Frederick Henry very intriguing. It is different compared to relationships in past books that are in a similar time era. In Jane Eyre, the women in the book seemed very desperate to find a husband, and settled for anyone who would be able to provide for them. Catherine plays somewhat hard to get, and is aware of Henry’s intentions. She does not give herself away to him very easily, and knows her value as an individual. Unlike other women from her time, she is not eager to find a husband and settle down, and is content with the way her life is at the moment. When Henry asked to get married, she constantly said no, and told him that they were already married in her mind. She also considered the fact that if they became married, she would be sent away and they would be separated. Catherine is aware of the consequences that her actions could cause, and continues this throughout the story (up to what we have read).

Comparison of Catherine Barkley and Helen Ferguson:
Catherine seems to have more of a personality. She is unlike most women, in that she can read Henry and see that this is initially more of a game to him. Henry is immediately drawn to Catherine when he arrives, for she has more of a mysterious nature. She also doesn’t want to get married, and even Henry identifies this as every woman’s dream, so it comes as a shock to him.
Helen is quieter. She seems to be more behind the scenes, and can is helping Henry and Catherine in their relationship. For example, she aids Henry and Catherine in passing notes while Henry is sick in the hospital and Catherine is working.
They are somewhat similar though, because they are best friends. They are able to balance each other out and work together to make each other happy.
Short Blog 1- Farewell to Arms practice
As we have began this book, I have come to like it and understand the context more. I was not expecting to be invested in reading the novel but so far I am extremely intrigued and enjoy it. I was drawn in when the little game with Cathrine, Henry and Rinaldi. I was shocked at Cathrines actions and quickly found that she is different than most woman at the time period of this novel. She is aware of Henrys actions especially and can predict his moves before he makes them. I knew that she would be an interesting character as soon as she slapped Henry when he went into kiss her. She is seemingly aware and does not put up with any funny business which is respectful but also shows that she has had experience in that area. I am excited to continue this book and get to know the main characters.
